Basic Gator Hunting Tips For Newbies

By George Hamilton

People fear the massive reptilian murder machine especially during feeding time. True crocodiles, or the Eusuchia, luckily did not evolve since the cretaceous period offering us a breath of relief. It would be a nightmare for the human species if these reptiles start walking on their hind legs to catch their meals everyday.

Blessed with many rivers Pierre Park, La is the ideal home for many alligators. Gator hunting starts in September on the first Wednesday in gator hunting in louisiana. Professional hunters and new applicants must file for cite tags, so they are able to harvest the animal.

About one point three million gators exists, and since 1988 harvesting and hunting of alligators is an international and national recognized program. Alligators provide leather for belts, boots, and saddles while its meat is cooked and devoured. Farming alligator is one of the biggest industry in the state.

However before these creatures are hunted, harvested, and turned into useful things. A hunter, or a newbie, must be at least 18 years old to be able to apply for two cite tags, and an alligator trapping license that is valid until the last season. At the end, hunters need to submit a harvest report to the governing body that manages the program.

Other documents to be submitted is a copy of a sketch plan of the property hunting in, a signature of approval from the proprietor, a valid hunting lease as well as proof of property. The season lasts for thirty days and at the end a harvest report is submitted. In regards to people who cannot comply they are required to hire a guide with possessing tags.

The foundations of gator hunting requires a basic knowledge about the equipment commonly used. And the purpose and usage of these tools. Four important things to have is a harpoon, head light, bang stick, and a gaff.

There are at least six equipments to have ready before hitting the bayou. At the top in the list is the harpoon pole which is used to locate and attach a restrain line, and considered mandatory especially for gators over seven inches, but unless it is six inch below a bow line works very well. Obviously, a lighting equipment that is not an obstruction during hunting, and most prefer a hands free headlight usually worn around the head.

Gators often struggle to break free from hunters, and at times the situation becomes dangerous and may cause panic and hysteria. But carrying a bangstick in place of a pistol or rifle is more safe and practical. Shooter will find that firing on a boat in water destabilizes their aim making for poorer accuracy.

Mixed emotions happen where the establishment of prey and predator are still uncertain. But come action time everyone must remain calm and prepared. Another necessary equipment is the bang stick which is similar to a gun, but is designed for ease of use and immediate execution of prey. Once the beast is restrained and calm, put it under water at least eight inches below and with the stick aim it behind the back of its head for a clean finish. However avoid lead and bone flying everywhere by never firing the bang stick above water or at the crown of its cranium. Wrap up the hunt by inserting a gaff under the front end in the bottom jaw, but if the animal struggles again shoot it until it is too dead to move.
